Hello everyone. Today, I will take you on a journey along the Nanpan River. It connects us to the whole Pearl River. We will explore the natural and cultural beauty of Yunnan's mother river.

Our journey has five parts. The geographical story, the river's history, local traditions, poems inspired by the river, and how we protect it today.

On this slide, we see a famous quote by Xu Xiake: "One drop feeds three rivers; one ridge divides two basins." One raindrop on Maxiong Mountain can flow into three rivers. The Nanpan starts here on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. It is the main source of the 2,214-kilometre-long Pearl River. The Nanpan is 914 kilometres long and drains 56,800 square kilometres. It is a cultural heart of Lingnan.

The river flows across Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi. Upstream, it waters the rich farmland of eastern Yunnan, known as the "Granary of Eastern Yunnan". Downstream, it cuts through deep gorges. This strong flow is perfect for making electricity. That is why the famous Tianshengqiao Hydropower Station is there.

For hundreds of years, the Nanpan was an important trade route. During the Qin and Han dynasties, people built the "Five-Foot Road" along the river. It was part of the Southern Silk Road. Later, in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the river became part of the Tea Horse Road. You can still imagine mule bells echoing through the valleys. Merchants' stories are carved into those old stone paths.

The river is home to the Yi and Miao peoples. The Yi celebrate the Torch Festival on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month. They light bonfires, sing and dance to chase away evil and pray for a good harvest. The Miao celebrate the Flower Hill Dance. Young people sing and dance on hillsides. Their silver jewellery shines like the river water below. Together, the Yi and Miao bring fire and silver to the Nanpan.

The Nanpan has inspired poets for a long time. He Jingming, a Ming dynasty poet, wrote about waves rushing like "ten thousand bulls in flight". A modern poet, Mu Zhi, asks: "Who holds the sway over the rise and fall?" He compares the river's rocks and waves to history. The river is a living poem.

Today, people work hard to protect the river. They control sewage, remove mud, and restore the riverbanks. Thanks to this, 97.4% of the water is now very clean. Eco-tourism is growing. You can take cruises or go paddleboarding at Wanfeng Lake and the Pearl River Source. We protect nature and help local villages grow. It is a win-win.

From a single spring on Maxiong Mountain to a flowing story of nature, history and culture — the Nanpan River is a true treasure. It is our shared duty to protect this mother river, so its story never ends.
