Day of People's Diplomacy at Volgograd Pedagogical University

On April 6, 2023, Volgograd State Social and Pedagogical University hosted the Day of Public Diplomacy, an event jointly organized by VGSPU itself and our city's administration.

Traditionally, Volgograd pays great attention to international humanitarian cooperation, because in 1944 it was our Stalingrad that founded the international twinning movement (aka the movement of sister-cities), which is currently considered one of the types of people's or citizen diplomacy. As noted by the event's moderator Daria Kakicheva, a public relations manager at the VSSPU Center for People's Diplomacy, April is a very suitable time to hold the Day of People's Diplomacy. This month marks the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, as well as World Twin-Cities Day.

The event's participants listened to the reports about the international activities of Volgograd administration, the projects and initiatives by the VSSPU Center for People's Diplomacy and the "School of International Relations and Diplomacy" at Volgograd Children and Youth Center.

A significant part of the event was dedicated to the development of cooperation between Volgograd and the city of Valencia (Venezuela). In October 2022, the Valencian Nelson Mandela Cultural Center held a round table on the work of Fyodor Dostoevsky. On February 2, 2023, a commemorative plaque dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi troops by the Soviet troops in the Battle of Stalingrad was opened in the very center of Valencia.

In its turn, this April, Volgograd organizers of the People's Diplomacy Day decided to dedicate their event to the 160th anniversary of one of the first romantic artists of the independent Venezuela – Arturo Michelena. In Valencia alone, his name is borne by an international airport, a university and a school of fine arts.

An introductory report on the life and work of the painter was made by VSSPU History and Law students Karina Semgaikina and Ksenia Anikeeva, volunteers at the Center for People's Diplomacy.

What became a true surprise as well as a real gift for the event's attendants was a pre-recorded video lecture by the Venezuelan art critic David Ocio of the Casa Paez Historical Museum of Valencia. He spoke about the idiosyncrasies of Michelena's art style and explained to Russian listeners the reasons for the artist's popularity in Venezuela.

Both participants and organizers of the event emphasized that public diplomacy brings peoples of different countries together, strengthens the friendship between cities, promotes the development of trade, economic, cultural, scientific, technical, sports and humanitarian ties.
