Same or Different: problems of the youth and their solutions (by Olga Shnaidman)

Participants of the "Same or Different: Topical Social and Cultural Problems of the Youth in Russia and Germany" project have already identified in their works a wide range of the issues and challenges that complicate the lives of young people nowadays.

Today's presentation encompasses the most global and disturbing among them and is brought to you by a student of the Faculty of State and Municipal Administration of the All-Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration – Ms. Olga Shnaidman. Its recording can be found by the following link: https://youtu.be/izBODaHLVqw

What was your incentive for taking part in the competition?

Olga Shnaidman:

"For me, participation in this competition is an opportunity to express myself and improve my English. I really love this language and its peculiarities, and, thanks to the "Same or Different" competition, I got a chance to completely immerse myself in the English environment."

Which of the problems mentioned in the presentation have you encountered in your life – not necessarily, of course, by having to struggle with them yourself?

Olga Shnaidman:

"In fact, in my life I have quite often come across the problems mentioned in my presentation. For example, most of my school friends are smokers. For them, it's a way of calming down. Unfortunately, few guys are willing to give up this habit and find another way to relax and distract themselves from their problems. In addition, I have just recently read the news about a 16-year-old girl who was selling drugs to earn money."

What do you think prevents people from applying the solutions you have recommended?

Olga Shnaidman:

"I think that the measures of combatting the problems I mentioned are not being applied due to the fact that the older generation itself is broadcasting onto us the wrong values and does not actively seek to eradicate alcoholism, smoking, drug addiction and other problems. Thus, the younger generation adopts the habits of their parents, because it's the parents who are most often seen as an example. It is also worth noting that these problems are observed in the children who are brought up in single-parent families and cannot be timely prevented from hanging out with the wrong people. The solution here is to develop a more active youth policy in the Russian regions with a high rate of such families."
