School No. 54 of Volgograd and High Middle School No. 2 of Jilin – "Kalinka"

Our new project "The Music Beat of My City" is dedicated to the musical bands of Volgograd and its twin-cities. Today's guests are the musical clubs of School No. 54 of the Soviet District of Volgograd and High Middle School No. 2 of Jilin with the "Kalinka" song.

This year, the "Kalinka" song written by Ivan Larionov, is celebrating its 160th anniversary. The song is practically the trademark of Russia, standing for the generosity of the Russian soul and its careless valiance. "Kalinka" is known all over the world – including China, where it is immensely popular.

Three years ago, School No. 54 of the Soviet District of Volgograd became friends with High Middle School No. 2 of Jilin, which has been Volgograd's twin-city since 1994. Volgograd teachers offered their Chinese partners to perform "Kalinka" online!

From our side, the performers are the "Trinity" teachers' choir of Volgograd School No. 54, under the coordination of Olga Samoilenko – a laureate of International and All-Russian competitions, soloist of the "Pokrov" folklore and ethnographic ensemble. The "Trinity" teachers' choir, too, has also repeatedly triumphed in the "Stalingrad Autumn" competition over the past 5 years.

From Jilin side, the song is performed by the student choir and their young instructors. The choir's artistic director is one of the High Middle School No. 2 music teachers.

The children acting out the accompanying dance are the 5 year students of the "Souvenir" creative group of School No. 54 of the Soviet District of Volgograd instructed by the school's dance master Oleg Kirpichenko.
