History

Twin-cities

Volgograd and the East-German Chemnitz (known at that time as Karl-Marx-Stadt) signed their agreement on cooperation in 1988. In Germany, municipalities connected by friendly relations are called “partner-cities” instead of “twins”.

With the city’s industries running at their full capacity during World War 2, Chemnitz was subjected to a massive bombing, during which the historical city center practically destroyed – to be subsequently rebuilt twice (soon after the war and after the Reunification of Germany).

Experts from Chemnitz have taken part in international forums held in Volgograd, and its sportsmen – in boxing, swimming and football competitions.

In 2018, a joint exchange project by a Volgograd and a Chemnitz school has been awarded an honorary diploma by the Russian and German ministers of foreign affairs.
