Diplomat’s Day was celebrated in Volgograd

On February 10, 2026, a thematic session dedicated to the Diplomat's Day – a relatively new festive occasion in the Russian Federation – was held at the Center of People's Diplomacy of Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University (CPD VSSPU). It was on February 10, 1549, that Ivan the Terrible's Ambassadorial Office, the earliest prototype of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was first mentioned in chronicles. Since then, this day in Russian history has been considered the starting point for the development of diplomacy as a separate state institution!

The event was organized by the Center of People's Diplomacy together with the School of International Relations and Diplomacy of the Volgograd Children's and Youth Center, with the participation of the International and regional relations directorate of Volgograd Mayor's Office.

Students (including international students), schoolchildren, and the Center's volunteers participated and also acted as speakers. As the meeting's moderator, Margarita Belitskaya, head of the Center of People's Diplomacy, emphasized, the purpose of the session was both to recall the history of the holiday and to pay tribute to outstanding representatives of the noble and important, yet often overlooked, profession of diplomacy.

Elena Grebenyuk, Head of the International Cooperation Department at Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University, delivered a welcoming speech. She noted that holding such an event in Volgograd is particularly symbolic, as our city is renowned for both the courage and fortitude of the defenders of Stalingrad and its active role in developing international cooperation.

Natalya Rimm, a teacher of supplementary education at the Volgograd Children and Youth Center and head of the School of International Relations and Diplomacy, also addressed the session participants. She immediately captured the audience's attention, reminding them that in the modern world, diplomacy is about building bridges between ideas and peoples, and therefore, anyone who studies languages and cultures is already involved in diplomacy. In closing, she urged everyone to learn, broaden their horizons, and build their own bridges, using words, arguments, patience, and deep knowledge as their weapons.

What else was discussed during the thematic session?

Sofia Sklyarova, a fourth-year student at the Institute of Historical and Legal Education, spoke about the history of the Diplomat's Day and how it is traditionally celebrated. She also spoke in detail about the orders and awards that every embassy official probably dreams of receiving.

Vladislav Podzolkov, a history and social studies teacher, prepared a report on the role of Gorchakov in resolving the Eastern Question in the second half of the 19th century.

Veronika Fedotova and Anastasia Gogalyuk, students at the Institute of Historical and Legal Education, discussed the work of Alexander Griboyedov in the context of the socio-political situation in the 19th century.

Emilia Rimm, of the School of International Relations and Diplomacy, spoke about the personal and family experience that had most probable shaped the Soviet Foreign Minister Andrey Gromyko as the man we would become known to be.

Our directorate's staff also served as experts: Maria Deeva presented a report on books and films on the history of Russian diplomacy.

The session was concluded with a thematic – that is, diplomatic – quiz compiled by students of the Volgograd Youth Center's School of International Relations and Diplomacy.

The International and regional relations directorate of Volgograd Mayor's Office and the VSSPU Center of People's Diplomacy once again congratulate all Russian diplomatic workers on their professional holiday!
